I've become halfway decent enough to start actually attempting to show off the results of me throwing paint at models. So I thought I'd show em here. Feel free to give advice so I might actually make em more than passable :p

First a skaven rat-ogre. It's the first one where I've actually managed to use shading appropriatly (who knew this is what you'd use a paint call "shade" for ;) )

A dooooooomwheel. This one actually turned out really well. It's also one of the few where I actually did something more with the base than just randomly stick some rocks on. I like how it feels completly out of control running over everything in it's path.

Don't put yourself down, they look good and you should post more so we can try to help you improve.

The first thing I noticed is they look a tad flat now this is usually down to highlights or camera flash.

Have you applied highlights to the models, especially the doomwheel?

Trust me, I'm not putting myself down. I've never been all that good at painting. The fact that I've managed to roughly colour within the lines is a slight miracle (yay for skaven that are allowed to look messy ;) )

And no, highlights is not something I've figured out how to actually do yet. When I try to do it it tends devolve into just another layer. I've only relativly recently figured out how to use shading appropriatly and I'm finally starting to figure out what gw's dry paint is supposed to be for (my first attempt with that paint was doing a carnosaur's entire freaking belly cuz I liked the colour... it was hell and I couldn't figure out why this paint was being such a pain to use...)

We will go slow and one step at a time ;)

Highlight, easiest way for a beginner is to drybrush, drybrushing is pretty simple to do, you can use any paint does not need to be a GW dry paint.

a square ended brush is best, get an old brush and cut it flat with a pair of scissors, dip it in your chosen paint and then wipe it on a paper towel, keep wiping until it leaves a faint paint mark on your thumb, now look at your model and look for the raised areas, now flick your brush back and forth going against the contours for example a naked leg you would go side to side, armour you would go up and down, paint will transfer onto the raised areas making instant highlights.

Try that for now but when picking your highlight colour go lighter than you think you need and apply more or less pressure with the brush depending on how heavy a highlight you want.

People think drybrushing is just for beginners, it's not it is a very fast way to produce good looking models, I use it all the time.

Try it post some pics :)

Yeah drybrushing is easy and instantly makes models look cooler. I also suck at edge highlighting so drybrushing is my way to go, too.

I love the dynamic look of that doom wheel! I have played against one once and that's how it feels: weird, dangerous, insane, and completely out of control. People put those on flat bases too often.

I also recommend taking pictures near a bright lamp (but no flash) with a white background (paper, or a bed sheet). It also helps the focus a bit.

What is that priest standing on? Is that a rock?

It's a big skull with some plants in it. Here's a picture showing it a bit better. I need a better place for taking pictures.. and for painting.. and for storing.. and for not freaking my girlfriend out cuz my dinosaurs are "slowly taking over the entire appartement" :p

    28878982_10213517868879969_1270999123_o.jpg

And yeah, it surprises me that the doomwheel didn't come with a more dynamic base like some of the heroes come with. It just doesn't look nice if you put it neat and straight on a flat base. Especially with the skaven on top of it screaming their longs out. It just looks confusing then.

    Ah! Well done!
Yeah the Dinosaurs taking over the apartment problem..... I cannot give much advice on that. My wife likes their look so our models are all in a big IKEA shelf with glass doors. (I didn't know there was such a thing like glass doors for BILLY, I was shocked!)

Fortunatly she doesn't mind displaying some of em. But I tend to be rather enthousiastic when I get into a hobby. So I've gotten somewhere in the neighbourhood of 200 models (mostly dinosaurs) in the past year or two. And our appartement isn't big enough for another Ikea shelf. She doesn't appreciate the current pace :p

I think these are the first saurus I've painted with some actual details. It actually has noseholes teeth and eyes that are approximatly in the right place.
