On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is the worst and 10 is the best, how would you rate Warhammer 8th Edition? This should represent your overall feelings towards it (gaming, fluff, models, etc.). Also, be sure to vote on the sister poll which rates the Age of Sigmar... http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/on-a-scale-of-1-to-10-how-would-you-rate-age-of-sigmar.16714/
It was hard for me, because I haven't played other editions. I gave it a 9 as a comparison to AoS and 40k, of which I think 8th is clearly the superior.
There are some major balancing issue in 8th, though. Certain playtest could perhaps have been done more extensively and why cannons are snipers, but archers can't hit or wound squat, I have no idea. Overall it's a good game, it really just have the same flaws 7th and 6th did, in many ways. So a 7 for me
So about 1 week into voting we have the following results... Age of Sigmar has an average rating of 4.0 (10 total votes) Warhammer 8th edition has an average rating of 7.6 (13 total votes) Let's get some more votes in for the polls!
Here are the updated poll results... Age of Sigmar has an average rating of 4.9 (26 total votes) Warhammer 8th edition has an average rating of 7.5 (20 total votes) 8th edition is still ahead by a significant margin, but the gap is closing. Let's get some more votes in for the polls!
Lets see, I'll give the game a 6. It's better than average, but not a good game. That's twice as good as the 3 I gave AoS. As far as the fluff, I'd say a solid 7. Would be higher if it wasn't for the End days non sense I didn't care for. And the models, ofc is a 10. Maybe a little generous given the new carnisour and the giant teeth old blood is not to my liking. But that is heavily outweighed by the ballistadon, troglodon, new skink priest, and terradon models. But since I think the 8th release has the best lizard models so far, 10. That puts me at a 7.66. I'm rounding that to an 8.
I give 8th edition a solid 8/10. Pros: - Lots of strategy involved with movement. - Fantastic models (from many races) - List building (soooo many options ) - Numerous magic lores to choose from. Cons: - Magic phase (too much chance and too much risk) - High cost of entry (model wise)
I gave 8th edition a 9, putting it on par with 6th edition, which I liked. I've played on and off since 5th edition, and I remember really enjoying the changes 6th edition brought to magic and to army selection, as 5th edition seemed very character heavy to me. 7th didn't seem to add much to the game, whereas 8th seemed to bring back some of what I liked from 5th edition and mixed it with what I liked from 6th/7th.
I voted 7, but it's still my favorite Warhammer edition, it's just that Warhammer was never as balanced or good as a wargame, and compared to other games I cannot give it more than a decent score. (I would probably rate KoW 8 or 9)
It is a tricky question. If we ignore RAW / RAI conflict with the army books, and the lack of support / army balancing, the game mechanics allow for a bunch of tactical awesomeness - skill in deployment, movement, redirecting, buffs - there is scope to become a better general with practice (unless you play WoC or Skaven, obviously. Spam spam spam spam....) Line of sight, shooting out of and through forests, could have been better conceived. Combat res was good, but could have been simpler (ie maxing out the "extra" res at something to add onto the wound res. I had about 4 attempts at designing a Spawning of Bob style tabletop static combat res calculator, but the thing would have been bigger than most tables.) I like that AoS rolled the initiative / skill and armour / ward into effectively one attack and one defence roll. Eliminating even one roll from combat would speed up the game to concentrate more on the important phase (movement) All up, I give a 7 FOR THE GAME SYSTEM. The sad thing is that ANY of us could have spent a drunken weekend with the rule book and made it an 8.5. GW why do you hate us? As for the Fluff, if we stop before the end times, the background pushes it to 8. Cost of participation, and we are back at 7. GW why do you hate us? (There. I voted in your poll. Now another Pacific Nation has gone under.)
I gave it a 7, great, fun but with definite space for improvement. I refuse to vote on the sister-poll for Age of Sigmar.
If all of the armies had been made so they each had their pluses and minuses in equality then I would have given it a 9. I haven't forgiven GW for what they did to TK's...
Then it would be a 10 in my books! At least they got some really nice models. Poor Bretonnia is still stuck in 6th edition!
Nice Necromancing @Lizards of Renown I withhold my vote(for now and a bit more), because my lack off knowledge of the 8th edition. And even if I read through the total, freaking fat, Rule Book I am not sure I can produce a knowledgeable and experienced vote. Grrr, Imrahil
I'd give a 7 to 8th edition. Many good things, but i also remember the flaws… must also be said that a great part of its charme, is due to an heritage of multiple previous editions, with a fascinating and growing lore. So part of its merit must be shared with the entirety of WHFB.
